What is a HEIC file, and how do I convert it to JPG?

HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default. It keeps good quality in a small file, but many Windows PCs, older Android phones, websites and apps cannot open it. To convert HEIC to JPG, add your photos to the converter above, keep JPG selected and download the results. It is free, works in your browser, and your photos are never uploaded.

    How it works

How to convert HEIC to JPG in 3 steps

No app, no account and no waiting for an upload. The whole thing takes about a minute, even for a full camera roll.

    1. Add your HEIC photos

Drop them on the box above, tap Choose photos, or paste them. You can add as many as your device can handle at once.

    2. Pick JPG or PNG

JPG is best for sharing and small files. PNG keeps every pixel and suits editing. The default quality of 90 looks the same to the eye.

    3. Download

Save one photo, or download everything as a single ZIP. Your photos stay on your device the whole time.

    The problem

Why will my HEIC photo not open?

HEIC (also called HEIF) is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad. It makes pictures about half the size, but it is newer than JPG, so plenty of software never learned to read it. That is why a photo that looks perfect on your iPhone can fail everywhere else.

    Windows PCs

Windows often needs extra codecs from the Microsoft Store before it shows HEIC photos. Without them you get a blank thumbnail or an error.

    Websites and forms

Many upload forms, job portals and online stores only accept JPG or PNG, so a HEIC photo is rejected.

    Older Android phones

Newer Android versions can open HEIC, but older phones and many apps cannot, and the sender is the one who gets blamed.

    Printers and editors

Print shops, kiosks and a lot of photo editors expect JPG. Converting first avoids a failed order or a missing file.

    Email and sharing

The person you send to may not be able to open the photo at all. A JPG opens on practically every device made in the last 25 years.

    Long-term backups

JPG is the safest format for archives you want to open in ten years, on whatever device you own then.

    Compare

HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: which format should you use?

Use JPG when you want a photo that opens everywhere and stays small. Use PNG when you need a lossless copy or transparency. Keep HEIC only for storing photos on Apple devices.

Prefer to do it on your device? Here is how, on each platform.

Stop your iPhone saving photos as HEIC
    1. Open Settings, then Camera, then Formats.
    2. Choose Most Compatible. New photos are saved as JPG instead of HEIC.
    3. This only affects new photos. Use the converter above for the ones you already have.
Copy iPhone photos to a PC as JPG automatically
    1. Open Settings, then Photos.
    2. Scroll to Transfer to Mac or PC and choose Automatic.
    3. When you connect the iPhone with a cable, iOS converts photos to a format the computer can read.
Open or convert HEIC on Windows 10 and 11
    1. Fastest: add the photos to the converter above and download JPG files. No installation.
    2. Or install the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Some PCs also need the HEVC Video Extensions, which may cost a small fee.
    3. After that, Photos and File Explorer can show HEIC thumbnails, and you can use Save as to make a JPG.
Convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac
    1. Open the photo in Preview.
    2. Choose File, then Export.
    3. Set Format to JPEG, pick a quality, and save.
    4. For many photos, select them in Finder, open them in Preview, then use File, Export Selected Images.
Convert HEIC to JPG on Android or Chromebook
    1. Open this page in Chrome or any modern browser and add the photos.
    2. Tap Download on each photo, or Download all for a ZIP.
    3. The files are saved in your Downloads folder, ready to share.
    Privacy

Private by design: your photos stay on your device

Most online converters upload your pictures to a server, convert them there and send them back. This one does not. The conversion code runs in your browser, so your photos are never sent to FileXL or anyone else. That matters for family pictures, ID photos and anything else you would rather keep to yourself.

The converted files also leave out the original location (GPS) data, so a shared JPG does not reveal where it was taken.

    FAQ

    HEIC to JPG questions, answered

Is this HEIC to JPG converter really free?

Yes. It is free, there is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit set by us. Convert as many photos as your device can handle.

    Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion happens inside your browser, on your own device. Your photos are not sent to FileXL or to any other server, which makes this safe for private pictures.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on an iPhone?

Open this page in Safari, tap Choose photos, select your pictures and download the JPG files. To stop new photos being saved as HEIC, go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 or 11?

Add your photos to this page and download them as JPG, with nothing to install. You can also install the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store so Windows can open HEIC files directly.

How do I convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac?

Open the photo in Preview, choose File, then Export, set the format to JPEG and save. For many photos at once, this page is faster because you can drop them all in together and get a ZIP.

Why will my HEIC photo not open?

HEIC is a newer format. Windows PCs often need extra codecs, older Android phones and many apps do not support it, and some websites reject it. Converting the photo to JPG makes it open almost everywhere.

Will I lose quality when I convert HEIC to JPG?

JPG is a lossy format, so there is a very small change, but at the default quality of 90 the difference is not visible in normal use. Choose a higher quality, or PNG, if you want the closest possible copy. Very large photos on an iPhone browser may be saved at about 16 megapixels because of a Safari limit.

Why is the JPG bigger than my HEIC file?

HEIC compresses photos more efficiently than JPG, so the same picture usually takes up more space as a JPG, often close to double. That is the price of a file that opens everywhere.

Can I convert many HEIC photos at once?

Yes. Drop in a whole batch, and download them one by one or as a single ZIP. Photos are converted one after another to keep your phone or computer responsive, so for hundreds of photos work in batches of 20 to 50.

Does the JPG keep the date and location of my photo?

No. The converted file does not carry the original EXIF data, which includes the camera details and GPS location. For most people that is a bonus, because it means you do not share where a photo was taken by accident.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG instead?

Yes. Switch the format to PNG above. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, but the files are much larger than JPG, so it is best for editing rather than sharing.

What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?

HEIF is the container standard and HEIC is the version that uses HEVC compression, which Apple uses for iPhone photos. People use the two names almost interchangeably, and this converter accepts .heic, .heif and .hif files.

How can I send iPhone photos so everyone can open them?

Upload them with FileXL. When you add HEIC photos to the FileXL uploader they are converted to JPG automatically, so the person who receives the link can open them on any device.

Sending photos to someone? Let FileXL fix it for you

Add iPhone photos to the FileXL uploader and they are turned into JPG on the way, so the person who gets your link can always open them. Large files, no account needed.
